Idol RPF: House of the Living (Adam/Kris)

Yayyy, finished! And yes, this is the one I've been tweeting about. *g*

House of the Living (17,099 words)
Adam/Kris, adult, explicit, horror-movie violence and consequences -- caveat lector!

Megan had been calling them zombies from the get-go; after the third one, while Adam was busy puking his guts all over the sidewalk, she went around to all of them and hissed, "Listen, they're zombies, do you get it?"

( Read the story )

With many many thanks to [info]merryish (who has awesome new Kradam story up too!), [info]julad, and [info]cesperanza for beta!

All fb loved. Zombiezzzzz! \o/

OBLIGATORY:

BRAAAAAAAAAINS!

ok done *skips up to read*

Re: OBLIGATORY:

*grins!*
Oh dear lord, that was fantastic. A love story and a political story and a zombie adventure all in one.
Your imagery is so perfect: I could exactly picure the Adam Lambert: Action Hero! photo. The moment when the idols look back and see the metal doors "bulging and relaxing, like they were breathing" struck me--it still kinda haunts me. Like the zombies were part of a larger organism. It takes true skill to turn a cliche like zombies in a mall into something terrifying.
And the emotional landscape you cover! Simultaneously so much breadth, but so detailed and specific.

Thank you so, so much for posting this.
aww, yay, thank you so much! I was v pleased with the breathing doors, I kind of freaked myself out with those actually. *g*
Holy fuck. This. This is why your writing wins awards.

I love how it begins with zombies, and then you give us the consequences, and then the consequences of the consequences, the story just unspooling until it comes to a perfect, natural ending. <3
*beams*! yay -- yes, I totally wanted to do the consequences story as much as the zombie story! we never get to see what happens AFTER the horror movie credits roll!
Wow, dude. Just wow. I am of the opinion that any given thing can be made better with the addition of zombies and you did that. I'm not even sure how to tell you how awesome this was, because it's hard to be gleeful about action hero Adam when they're all so broken. I think you handled it all so well and so right, the guilt and the anger and the alienation, and in some ways it's such an extention of the Idol experience itself: if you weren't there, you just can't know what it was like. You can't. The only people who can ever understand and relate are the ones who were there with you.

This was really just magnificent.
...

Yeah, I have no words at all for this. Perfect. &hearts
wow.i can't remember a story so /difficult/ to get through in a long, long time.just.perfection.(& i am wrecked on a subway platform, so kudos for that!)
O_o

I. You. WHAT. Adam Lambert and zombies. IDEFK. HOW HAS LIFE ON THIS PLANET EXISTED FOR SO LONG WITHOUT THIS STORY, I ASK YOU.

ok reading bie.

ETA: OH GOD WHAT. YOU MADE ME CRY, YOU EVIL FIEND. Fuck, this was awesome in ways that I am sadly unable to articulate. Let me once again state that this fandom pretty much has no actual interest to me outside of your awesome fics. IDEFK, I bet if you wrote obnoxious political commentary for Fox News, I'd think it was rad. This has a highly dangerous potential, frankly. PLZ TO CONTINUE USING YOUR POWERS FOR GOOD AND NOT FOR EVIL KTHXBIE.

Yay! Zombies!
OH MY GOD. OMG.

That was incredible. I don't even know what to say but omg crying and laughing here and OMG.

Seriously? OMG.
What? No seriously, WHAT!?

How does this fic even work? How does it even exist?

It shouldn't be perfection, but it is. IDGI. But I love it. So much.

Just...no. I don't have words. Game over. You win. Just everything. I'm not even making sense anymore. See what you've done to me? You’ve broken me with the epic. I'm off to read it again.
This was just absolutely incredible. So different from everything else out there, and extremely well written.
Wow. I had a lump in the back of my throat the entire time, and yet was still somehow simultaneously laughing. The range of emotions that this fic inspires is mindblowing.

And every single time something happened, I was like, YES. THIS IS EXACTLY HOW IT WOULD HAPPEN OH MY GOD. Everything--the zombies, the consequences, the relationships. (and also--maaaaaaaaaaatt. ;___________;)

Thank you so much for writing this. I feel like I now need to pick myself up and put myself back together. :)
Who knew the only thing missing from AI fic was zombies?

It's wonderful.
This was marvelous. The way Adam ended up as the tribe's warrior against his will was great. One thing I ended up missing, though; after Scott left in the beginning, he was not mentioned again. It was implied that he survived and was back in the tour with them, but it was never actually mentioned. I think it could have deserved a mention for closure on the issue.
Zombies!! And action Adam and and and ... zombies!!! Okay, this was perfect. Seriously. I'm going to be late for work because I had to read the whole thing. And can I just say - zombies!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, very good Astolat - had to read the whole thing without stopping!
Wow! That was awesome!
:((( This was so amazing and hurty and i love zombie fics where (almost) everyone survives. I really liked Danny in this. And Matt :-( Adam was fierce and amazing and i hurt for him. Poor bb. Well done.
That was...amazing to read. It was so raw and emotional, I'm just aching for all of them.
I don't think I can be coherent - but.

Yes. Adam acting on instinct (his first kill - protecting Allison - YES) and knowing he was killing and tiny things like the sunburn, and the anger and the PTSD that no one does anything about, and Matt - oh, goodness, MATT - and Adam as action hero, but not, and zombies and "it didn't just happen" and then hot and sweet and sad and...

Wow.
Oh. My. God. I feel like I just got hit by a bus.
That. That is why I will read ANYTHING that you write, because it always winds up amazing (even though I never comment because I am a bad, bad girl).
In short, I am amazed and heartbroken and really happy all at the same time. ...now I think I need to read that again......
I can't put into a comment how much I loved this. It's all your fault that I'm now actively seeking out American Idol fic. But the thing I like best about all your writing is the subtle, natural, and totally trenchant way that metatextual themes weave their way into your plotlines. This story is such a smart comment on so many themes: the way the media and much of the public misreads the complexities of GLBT identities, the ways that celebrities are on the one hand given such unassailable status while also having so little practical control over some parts of their lives, the way the media's desire for simple narratives so often distorts the realties of any situation, so many of the bulletproof narrative kinks that fandom in general has in particular, and the ways that our desires for information affect the lives of those in the public eye.

I mean, look, I know it has zombies and all, and you probably didn't mean for it to do all of that, but it did it all the same.
I... am too shaky still - in reaction to this incredibly powerful story - to say any thing like what you've said above but you are so correct in all of it. Especially that Adam as a gay man is so central to this narrative. (And a gay man who grew up after they started treating AIDS - that perspective really comes through to me, stuck as I still am in some ways during the time when it was just a fucking evil pariah-death sentence.) And I should stop because I'm crying again but I guess I just wanted to say THIS in response to your comment.
Gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous. I love the way you wrote this, the progression and how you dealt with their feelings after. It all felt very real, as if this is what would happen if this situation ever came true.

Definitely saving this one.
Oh, oh Kris! This is brilliant, I love seeing what happens after, the coping/not coping mess it becomes. So fascinating!

Aha, also: on the one hand I am all for ZOMBIE SHENANIGANS IN PHOENIX YESS, but on the other hand... some of the geography and logistics of their trek keeps throwing me off, and my brain is still stuck trying to puzzle out a map. (FWIW, I work across the street from the only mall the zombie showdown could have happened in!!! Awesome!!! but, um, for example, there's no Target in the mall. It's across the street.)

Despite that, I still love this story. :D
hahaha, actually it is the Deer Valley Towne Center which CLAIMED ONLINE to have both a Target and an AMC, but Google Maps Street View would not let me get close enough to see the layout, so that is invented. I totally found the Black Angust Steakhouse and the condos there, though. *g*

They start in jobing.com arena and basically end up where I-17 meets West Carefree Hwy, too, but everything in between is also totally made up. :DDDD
