Harry Potter: The Scholomance Series

Some history for this. Back in the year 2000, after Goblet of Fire and before the first movie, I had a few happy months in HP fandom, and among other things I wrote several connected stories in what I'm now calling The Scholomance Series. These stories didn't stand alone, the last one ended kind of brutally with blithe promises for a quick sequel, and from this I learned a very important lesson, which is that I can't post WIPs of any kind, because I cannot trust myself to stay in a fandom long enough to finish them.

Anyway, for the last seven years I've been trying to finish this last story -- I had about a quarter of it, and then it gradually got up to a half, and every so often I would take it out and noodle on it some more, usually after I got some fresh canon to get the motor running; at one point I even tried starting from scratch; but it just wouldn't go very far. I was about ready to give up, and earlier this week, [info]resonant8 started clearing out her HP locker, and I decided yeah, it was time, I was going to just post it, whatever, and then I opened it up to do some formatting, and then boom, I finished it after all.

*takes victory lap, raised fists in the air*

(Oh, and then I turned the started-from-scratch version into an extra side-story.)

So, here it is, the whole thing (I suspect the new stories won't make sense without the old ones). Diverges wildly from canon after Goblet of Fire. Adult, explicit (in Prodigal), and bloody. Harry/Draco, Ron/Hermione, hints of other pairings.

The Scholomance Series

A RARE DESCENTPASSING THROUGHTHE ELEVENTH DOORKEEPER
THE SEASONLESS WORLDTHE LAST VISITPRODIGAL

And here are the two new stories, with many thanks to, I am ashamed to admit, more betas than I now remember, although I know [info]elynross looked at Prodigal along the way, and [info]cesperanza has gone over them for me now. ♥

The Last Visit (588 words)
It has nothing to ask you. It has only something to say.
(Note: this story fits into Prodigal -- I think it works better read first, but it's not a standalone.)

Prodigal (13,850 words)
...his greatest terror was that someone would respond to him.

omg yay

Haven't read them yet, but I have to say -- you *rock* for finishing these. (And you know, I somehow never doubted you would.)
ahaha, well, that makes one of us! I doubted! a lot! *grins*
Goosebumps! That was so good.
Also, yes, wow, finishing after seven years is a totally awesome achievement.
Add me to the ones that are glad that you finished this series! \o/
Haven't gotten a chance to read yet, but man, it's really hard to see people cleaning out their HP closets!

I'm so glad you finished them.
Gracious! I remember when these first came out on that Yahoo!groups e-mail list. Christ, it's been a long time.
Wow, I'm so glad you finish this series. Your stories are the first HP stories I read. I'm sorry you didn't have time to fully write Prodigal. Some of the parts skip too much, and the last spell was confusing. If virginity is why Knife of Astarte doesn't work anymore, couldn't Draco slept with Harry earlier? But overall, just glad to see an ending.
I have never read the HP books, only have superficial knowledge of the content of them, and what i know of some HP D/H fanfics i have read.
would there be lots of knowledge of the books required to understand your Scholomance Series??
or, err, do you have some kind of summary of your fic somewhere? :)
Ha! My first thought was, "An HP/WOW* crossover? Wuh?" I guess my current brain-rotting activity is taking its toll!

Congrats on the completion!

World of Warcraft
There are many, many things I liked about this conclusion. Draco using the dark magic he'd learned, the creepy, creepy corpse army, Ginny's rescue and redemption, the thing with Fred and George, Snape, on and on. It was well worth the wait.
Oh. My. God.

Those were pretty much the first HP stories I read that I remember - every so often I'd reread and be sad that they wouldn't be finished ever. And now I can just click through and read how it ends! You rock so much. Thank you!

*off to read*
Oh wow.

I'm always interested in seeing what you write, but this series holds a special place for me. I remember you posting these stories on, um, some mailing list that I cannot remember the name of for the life of me. Somewhere in my boxes, I printed and bound the first stories. I loved them while you were posting them, and was excited to see them.

When the end didn't come quickly, I concluded that the series was going to be on of those great unfinished story cycles. Sad, but it happens. No cause to stamp my feet and pout, or to bother you about the series. But, now you've finished it, so before reading I just want to say thank you.
Ah ha ha. Just read through all of these and...well.
The dead coming back, you made me cry. Fred and George should never be separated - i'm glad they found each other.

And Draco...oh. I liked him so much, he tried so hard and did so well. Yay, for Draco!

The 'good' side and their arguments are so damn annoying. Heh.

This was interesting and different and i liked how it was from different pov's and about different people. Good, good stuff!

*yes, i'm totally unspoiled for the last book*
:)
hey, sorry to bug, but any other warnings I should be aware of before reading? I sort of hate to get hooked on a series and then in chapter four there's suddenly non-con or something like that.
OMG

I remember stumbling onto these ages ago. I'm pretty sure I found 'The Eleventh Doorkeeper' first and read it and was in love and then went back and read the rest in order. And I remember loving them and thinking 'this is so amazing' and I'm pretty sure this series is what made me hunt down the rest of your fanfic in the first place. And now you finished it.

More comments will follow, which may or may not be more coherent.
Just read this whole thing for the first time, and I enjoyed it a lot--especially 'The Eleventh Doorkeeper'. The whole Scholomance doorkeeper thing is brilliant.

And there is also one sort of random thing I especially loved, which is dude! you used a Greek spell! Egkataleipo FTW!
"The Last Visit" -- second person POV is so hard to do without sounding... pretentious and unbearably, fakely literary, so when it's done well, I'm always impressed. It's a great callback to "The Eleventh Doorkeeper", which, even now is maybe my favorite thing you've written. Loved this little view into Lucius, and how his thought process is truly chilling.

"Prodigal": omg, the bringing back the dead spell is genius. A very beautiful piece of writing, actually, how it begins with a whisper on the edge of Harry's hearing and transforms into something full of joy and weirdness and loss -- to have Ron beside him again and Dumbledore's wisdom shining again, and it's utterly perfect that everyone is strong enough to say goodbye to their dead except for Fred and George, refusing to be parted again. Gorgeous.

But really: all I wanted from the finale was to have Draco come back and kick some ass with the eldritch power he painfully acquired in Scholomance. And he did! So I'm happy! Yay! He may be twisted out of true and half-insane with loneliness and bitterness, but he's a hero all the same. That Snape's acerbic remarks to that effect are so happy-making!

I can't help feeling the conclusion felt a little bit rushed and I would have liked a little more of insight into Ginny's mind, but I can't argue with the results: Harry + Draco and a little baby! heh. Bet this vision of utter domesticity ever crossed Draco's mind in Scholomance as his ultimate destiny.
Ooh! I enjoyed this. Color me shallow, but I loved Draco's long hair, quiet voice, dark robes, and pale skin. Mmmmm.

I'm struck by how perfectly in character you write everyone, especially since I just finished DH. Nicely done.

I'm pleased you started with Neville, and making him a Seer struck me as wonderfully imaginative. He makes a more than apt Cassandra.

Finally, enthralled!Ginny definitely came across as the creepiest element.
i sobbed like a baby over the scene with the dead people. fred and george! oh god. you broke me.
I'm so thrilled that you finished this, it lived up to all my expectations and then some :) I loved the Fred and George thing, nearly cried at their last scene, and Ginny finally being the one to kill Voldemort was fitting.
I...holy crap. I can't believe falling behind on LJ has caused me to miss this being posted!

*flails gleefully around the room*

Will comment later when I have time to read, since I want to re-read all the previous ones.
...you got me into HP in the first place, and once upon a time I wanted nothing so much, fannishly, as to see more of this series, so I will definitely be taking some time out to jump ALL OVER them. (And probably reread the Weather stuff just for sheer nostalgia and the reminder of my oft-forgotten dialogue-only kink.)
OMG!! Thank you so much!! It's been 2 years waiting for the Scholomance series

Tons of hugs,
Lhug
Here via friendsoffriendsof. . . . and I didn't realize you were Shalott, and I can't believe I didn't know these were posted. Yours was some of the first HP fic I ever read (with Tissue of Silver, and Irrestible Poison, and Transfigurations . . . ) and I loved it. Thank you!
You're an amazing writer. Thanks for this!! ^____^
Oh wow. Those were...man, I don't even know what to say, that is a fantastic idea.

I hadn't read any of these stories until now, but I find what you've written in some ways more satisfying than DH, and it took me a minute to figure out why, but in Prodigal, you get a much clearer sense that there's a continuing price for what happened, past the first flush of victory and what was lost in the war.

Anyway, just to say I really liked the ending, and that reading from the beginning to the end, I can see that your writing has sharpened up and gotten better, although I couldn't put my finger on exactly how the last story is better written than the first.
Sweet lord......this is brilliant
I finished reading all of these in one great breath (I metaphorically forgot to breathe at many sections of this arc) and have but this to say: Oh my god.
The end. And the twins. Wow. And not letting go, and dying cheerfully on a hillside for a few more hours with the dead.

For some reason, that is the part that kills me.

I hate the idea of the twins being separated. I hate it, I hate it, I hate it. So this was one of those beautiful-horrible things.

You're brilliant. I think I'm going to go cry some more.
I read this series in one day and I just wanted to tell you that this was amazing. and an incredibly satisfying read. I know those adjectives can't really convey how wonderful reading this was but sometimes words just fail me.

(hi! I stumbled across this series through del.icio.us.)
so awesome! I love this :D
Oh lord.

I just re-read the Scholomance Series again, and then realized that I hadn't commented the first time. So, to make up for it here you go.

I love and adore this series, particularly Prodigal. When the dead return it consistently makes me cry like a baby, which is a good thing since I assume that's what you were going for. Fred and George refusing to be parted is utterly perfect, and hits every cord I've got. And Dumbledore warning Harry that they'll have to let the dead go again is also note perfect.

I would really love to see an epilogue to the whole thing with Harry, and Draco, and the unnamed baby, and the newly freed wizarding world. But, that's me. I like to end with a smile. This ends with a smile through tears though, and that's okay too.

As a fellow admirer of the Scholomance Series, your icon really is perfect for it.
Just found this series. Much better than JKR but I doubt if it would have done for the early teen market. Loved the whole Scholomance part and the final escape. I was very impressed by the second person section - that's so hard to write. Loved the eventual coming together for Harry and Draco, too, and the way that in a sense that saved them! Thanks for this set of stories.
O_O holy crap, I'd actually gotten to a point that I thought the series was permanently incomplete, and I just stumbled over the final 2 parts. That was awesomely amazing!
Great dramatic scene at the end of ch. 2. Wow.
Ch. 3 was interesting. I appreciated the insight about Dumbledore and eavesdropping. Nice little twist at the end.

ch. 4

Plot! Yay! How exciting. Good dramatic scenes.
Hi astolat,

I realize you are very busy right now (ps: congrats!), but wanted to give you a heads up that I recorded a podfic of the Scholomance Series for this year's podbang. It's up here. Thanks for writing it and I hope you enjoy the recording :D

boom-queen
I'd heard of but never read these, in my long years of lurking in HP fandom; what an exciting set of stories these were. Like many other commenters, Fred and George's fate made my heart ache.

Thank you.
I . . . HATED IT! Dumbledore, McGonagall, Pomphrey, Sprout, George, Ron, Mrs. Weasley, Percy, the old peeps dead and Ginny a #@&! Death Eater! Instead have Ginny hostage, Bellatrix as Ginny polyjuiced, Ron Stunned, the poisoned unconscious, and Voldemorte killed. Do a fic with this basic plot and MAYBE you'll get a positive comment form me.
Sorry over reacted big Voldemorte dead everyone happy fan.

well, I'm certainly *way* behind, and I don't even know if anyone will see this comment...but I just have to say this story's fucking *brilliant*. I cried HARD at the part about George and Fred. Really, I prefer this to the canonical ending for them. Thank u so much for giving us this wonderful, wild gush of imagination.
